Keeping up to date with the latest news and emerging trends in the retail, residential and leisure sector is key to supporting the project work we do with our clients. This means our team are constantly searching for relevant news stories, so we thought we would share some of the best ones we have been talking about recently with you.

1. The hip outdoor market dubbed ‘Mercato’ are expanding to Ilford and Mayfair

The food haven in Ilford will include an on-site German micro-brewery, cooking classes and cinema screenings.

Liv and Hannah from the Property Consulting Group visited Mercato Mayfair this week and though it wasn’t your typical street food market, being a church setting, but provided some excellent food stands and artisan deli.

Through our research from Shopper Dimensions, we have found that catering conversion in the capital has been increasing steadily since 2017, highlighting the value of a strong and unique catering offer to capitalise on London’s captive audience.

2. Make up brand Morphe opens first store in Manchester Arndale

Beauty influencers Mmmmitchell and Paige, who own the makeup brand Morphe have successfully launched their first store in their hometown of Manchester. Hundreds of fans turned up for the store opening.

3. During Black Friday, Department stores are struggling to compete with online and strive to become more relevant

Department stores have been under many challenges with the rise of online retail. During one of the busiest times of the year department stores are launching new initiates to make them relevant.

For example, Kohls in the US are setting up a return counter for unwanted amazon items, John Lewis in Southampton have launched an experience desk offering cooking classes to art courses and Macy’s are now selling second-hand clothes. Find out more here.

M&S

Take a look at the new M&S store in Clapham/Battersea with dystopian shelving, a disco pizza oven and an in-store salad and herb farm fixture. Read more here.

4. Luxury Goods retailer Louis Vuitton has bought Tiffany for $16bn

LVMH has expanded its portfolio through the acquisition of jewellery brand Tiffany, which has over 14,000 people and has around 300 stores.

5. Selfridges shows commitment to sustainability by stopping selling single use make up wipes

The department store has replaced single use plastic wipes with recyclable or re-usable alternatives. This is in the attempt to tackle plastic issues as part of their Project Ocean campaign that they launched in 2011. Find out more here.

6. Sports Direct are to rebrand as Frasers Group

Mike Ashley is leading a rebrand with the aim to move away from the sportswear image, as the group now owns many retailers including Evans Cycles, Sofa.com and House of Fraser. Read more here.

7. The weakening pound has led to investment in over 200 hotels in London

The hotel market has benefitted from the Brexit-related sterling slump, as tourism has continued to grow. It has become cheaper for international tourists to visit, leading to the investment in more London hotels (over 50 in the Westminster area).

Tram Champagne Bar at Selfridges London
