Here’s what the Property Consulting Group have been talking about this week…

Keeping up to date with the latest news and emerging trends in the retail, residential and leisure sector is key to supporting the project work we do with our clients. This means our team are constantly searching for relevant news stories, so we thought we would share some of the best ones we have been talking about recently with you.

 

 

1. Burberry launches AR shopping tool

Burberry are making purchasing a new handbag even more tempting for all of us in PCG with their new AR tool; shoppers can trial their products against existing outfits through a smartphone search engine.

Burberry exemplifies how technology can be used to seamlessly connect digital and physical environments, whilst specifically tailoring purchasing platforms to its Luxury core shopper groups. The retailer’s shoppers are typically Affluent Achievers and Rising Prosperity Acorn Groups, who are high spending but time poor, not having as much time to visit a physical store, therefore this alternative seems to be a perfect opportunity for brand expansion!

2. Poundland “diversifies” its range to include groceries

Following a successful trial in Yorkshire, Poundland will begin to sell chilled and frozen food in 60 of it’s stores across the country next week! Expanding its offer is a great idea to continue to increase brand value with 86% of shoppers who visit Poundland going on to make a purchase! This is one to watch with the success of value supermarkets in the last year.

LAKESIDE PUTS PUREPLAY RETAILERS ‘INTU’ THE SPOTLIGHT

Fashion House at intu Lakeside is an exciting new space which provides Pureplay retailers the opportunity to experiment with the benefits that a physical store can bring under shorter, less restrictive lease contracts. CACI research revealed (Online Halo, 2019) that across the UK online sales are 106% higher within a store’s catchment; we are excited to see how well these brands perform!

3.Gymshark gets physical

After several successful events, Gymshark are the next online retailer to open a pop-up store in Covent Garden, but with a twist... We’re looking forward to seeing their collaboration with Gymbox who will offer workout sessions and classes as well as their weekly product in-store launches! Gymshark is meeting the needs of their core customer group, CACI research revealed 18 to 34-year olds are increasingly dominating physical retail accounting for 9% more footfall than in 2014 as they move away from traditional buying behaviours in search of leisure and personalisation.

4. John Lewis introduces “Wear it, love it, hand it down”

The latest John Lewis campaign aims to tackle the large proportion of clothing waste resulting from the short lifespan of children’s clothing. Trialling with coats, reusable labels will be attached to encourage the passing down of items. It will be interesting to see how this sustainable retail initiative will perform in a traditional department store format.

5. New Yorkshire designer outlet secures 23 brands

Scotch Corner Designer Village has signed a variety of retailers including Calvin Klein, Levi and Mint Velvet to fill part of its 250,000 square-foot village set to open in 2021. Outlet centre shoppers are typically on a Big Day Out Mission, with 45% engaging with catering, which has seemingly been taken into consideration with catering and events at the forefront of the Village’s offer. The location being just off the A1 provides great access for outlet shoppers who are much more likely to arrive by car and have an average drivetime 44% higher than all other shopping destinations (CACI Data). With no other similar offer within 60 minutes drive of the centres, the Northerners of the team can’t wait to have a top outlet open nearby!!

BATTERSEA POWERSTATION ANNOUNCES FIRST WAVE OF RETAILERS

Battersea Power Station have announced their first wave of retailers due to open next year! 70% of commercial retail space has now been let with the most recent announcements including well established brands such as Hugo Boss, Kiehls and Jo Malone, as well as a more bespoke offer with Royal Selangor, Finlay & Co and Archlight Cinema. This hybrid mix of high street and more unique retailers provides an alternative type of London retail destination with something for all of us in PCG!
