Bricks vs Clicks

Property Consulting Group Director Alex McCulloch speaks at Maples & Calder Briefing

Dublin, 17th October 2018: Alex McCulloch, Director with the CACI Property Consulting Group, speaks at Maples & Calder Breakfast Briefing: The Future of Retail, Bricks vs Clicks.

The presentation looked specifically at the unique challenges facing the Irish retail industry.

Key Stats:

  • 50% of Irish consumers now shop online
  • 62% of Irish shoppers 25-34 get shopping inspiration from social media
  • 3/5 of Irish online spend leaves the country
  • 8% of Irish retail spend goes online
  • 3% of online spend touches a store
  • In Ireland 92% of spend still touches a store, compared to 85% in the UK

Alex McCulloch, Director with CACI’s Property Consulting Group:

The Irish shopper is culturally and socially aligned to the UK and are ready to shop online. However the structural constraints of a country dominated by Dublin has meant that the infrastructure isn’t in place to support them. Many brands have only one store in the country and don’t offer click & collect or similar. Ireland is at a cross-roads, the retail sector can embrace online and innovate, becoming world beaters in digital retailing or it can continue to follow the UK’s lead and allow the coming digital wave to overtake it.
