Data Engineer - Data Services Group

The Data Services Group

Data is at the heart of our company, and the Data Services Group are the experts on the data used within and supplied by the Marketing Solutions Division of CACI, based at our Kensington Head Office.
As part of the wider Data Products & Innovation business unit, we are responsible for the ingestion of third party commercial and open data, mostly of a geographic nature, and making it usable and accessible across the business. Such data includes demographics, street mapping, administrative and postal boundaries and retail location data, both for the UK and worldwide.
Our team are also responsible, in collaboration with other parts of the business, for the development and maintenance of a number of CACI’s own data products, relevant to applications across a wide range of sectors including retail, leisure, media, finance, health and local government.
Much of our data is reprocessed to a proprietary database format and published for use with CACI’s Geographical Information System software, “InSite”. The team also provide technical support for internal users of InSite.

 

Key responsibilities

We are moving towards a more open environment where data can be shared and accessed more easily across the company, and for data processing from SAS towards Python, Postgres and other technologies. This role will be key to both of these developments.
As such, the successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Managing the data asset which feeds into our data products and datasets.
  • Owning the Data Services Group’s data ingestion, processing and storage to maintain those products.
  • Cleaning, verifying, reformatting and enhancing data using various software tools.
  • Matrix management of the resource within DSG to support with internal automation projects.
  • Leading the migration of processes to feed into a new Data Warehouse, and to develop these to extend beyond processes purely required for InSite (e.g. mobile data, banking data)
  • Driving the liaison with the technical team working on the Data Warehouse build.
  • Providing database administration of our data asset.
  • Supporting the data requirements of InSite database builds, working alongside those in DSG responsible for keeping InSite up to date.
  • Supporting the data requirements of the Product Development Team where appropriate.
  • Driving forward new processes, efficiencies and innovative techniques to ensure our products and data assets remain relevant and market leading.

 

Core skills, knowledge, experience required

The successful candidate will have a bachelors degree (2:1 or above) or Masters in Mathematics or other subject with significant numerate content, experience in database development, business intelligence or integration development, and have the following attributes:

  • Strong knowledge and proven experience working with Python
  • Solid understanding of data transformation and manipulation techniques.  E.g. joins, aggregation, filtering, pivoting.
  • Solid understanding of core programming concepts. E.g. variables, conditions, loops.
  • Experience in, or comfortable with, applying knowledge in different programming languages.
  • You are a self-starter, creative and willing to challenge the status quo.
  • Demonstrate an intellectual curiosity and passion for technology.
  • Be a communicative person who values building strong relationships.

 

Desirable skills and experience

The following skills and experience are also desirable:

  • Postgres knowledge
  • Experience with an ETL tool
  • Experience with processing spatial data
  • Knowledge and experience of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) software e.g. PostGIS, QGIS and spatial data packages such as FME and Alteryx
  • GitLab, Cloud services
