WHY YOUR TEAM NEEDS TO START ACTING LIKE A CLOUD SERVICE PROVIDER

Launching a cyber-attack is now easier than ever before. Security breaches are on the rise as organisations still struggle with the basics such as not dealing with issues around software vulnerabilities, patching delays and shadow IT.

What’s more, in today’s hyper-connected world where applications are widely distributed across locations, clouds and branch networks; IT environments are even more complex and attack ‘surfaces’ are larger. This means that the risks are increasing and the security challenge for companies with a multi-cloud strategy is becoming even more complicated.

To make matters worse, applications and data are also continually on the move. It is predicted that by 2020, there will be a 50% increase in the amount of enterprise-generated data processed outside a traditional data centre or cloud.

Gartner recently reported that 60% of digital businesses will suffer a major service failure within the next 2 years due to the inability of IT security teams to manage digital risk. So, however you look at the problem, it has been very challenging for us as IT professionals to balance the need for increased security against business demands.

Digital transformation is happening now and is placing huge pressure on IT teams to deliver applications faster and improve time to market. But at the same time, they are also being asked to decrease business risk in the face of advanced, persistent threats that continue to increase.

It is predicted that by 2020, there will be a 50% increase in the amount of enterprise-generated data processed outside a traditional data centre or cloud.

IT NOW NEEDS TO ACT LIKE A CLOUD SERVICE PROVIDER

Organisations now expect IT to have the same level of speed, agility and security as large cloud service providers such as Amazon, Microsoft and Google. While most enterprise data centres are nowhere near the size and scale of these web giants, they still require similar speed, agility and economics.

They have achieved these benefits by designing abstraction layers into their infrastructure. The networking elements and security services are decoupled from hardware and baked into their software applications.

From a historical perspective, abstraction has been one of the fundamental enablers in computer science and software engineering. Every time we add a significant abstraction layer, we accelerate innovation above and below it. Consider, for example, how operating systems, programming languages, APIs and server virtualisation have transformed information technology.

IT is experiencing a difference of opposing forces: The business wants more for less

IT is expected to adapt to changing market demands and technology use models, drive productivity & growth and improve quality of service. However, it is also expected to consolidate and reduce cost – this puts us in a difficult position. But there is an answer. Many IT organisations are using network virtualisation to successfully address both forces, just like they did with server virtualisation.

Cloud service providers have proven that applications & services can be provisioned on-demand and have an almost immediate impact on the business. Executive leadership is insisting that its own IT operate and perform like these large cloud service providers. They want the same level of speed and agility for their business.

IT organizations that do not think and act like a cloud service provider are losing the confidence of business executives. As a result, the business sometimes bypasses IT to access the infrastructure, applications and services it needs.

This ‘IT evasion’ results in unwanted fragmentation that reduces the overall value of remaining corporate IT services. So, by changing the culture of your IT department to think & act like a cloud service provider will help future proof your team and make a positive contribution to the overall business strategy.

In part 2 of this blog series, I’ll be looking at why a hard data centre perimeter is no longer effective and how virtualising your network can transform your application security.
