South Nottinghamshire develops an affordable housing model using CACI's PayCheck data
The authorities in South Nottingham needed to understand how much low cost housing is required. This analysis provides a framework from which their local Housing Investment programmes can be constructed.
PayCheck, CACI's household income dataset that assigns households to income bands ranging from £0-£5000 to £100,000+, was used in combination with Land Registry and local housing market data. This enabled each authority to estimate the proportion of households that cannot afford to buy on the open market.
Including these estimates into the projected growth in the overall number of households, as stated in the Nottinghamshire structure plan, and allowing for relets of the existing stock, each authority can identify the number of new homes required for the future.
The final stage was to add those currently requiring low cost housing, as evidenced by mortgage defaulters, homeless households and families living as part of someone else's household who would like a home of their own. This gave South Nottinghamshire the total need for low-cost housing.
"This is a good example of local authorities working together to help meet the needs of their areas. PayCheck has provided an important input to this process, as there are no official statistics about incomes at the level of detail which we required."
